How to Prevent Carpet Fading

Whether you recently installed carpet in your home or you have had it for many years, you know that it is important to prevent carpet fading so you can keep the overall look intact. The moment your carpet is installed and it is exposed to sunlight, fading begins. Although, there are some ways to prevent fading before it happens.

Fade Resistant Carpet

To prevent carpets from fading, you should first limit the amount of sunlight that reaches them. While it is not feasible to live in a dark dungeon, you can keep blinds closed when you are not at home. You can even purchase ultraviolet light-blocking window treatments to limit fading. If you want to add a level of protection directly to the carpet, you can have a fluorocarbon protector added. This is only temporary protection and you will have to have it reapplied on a regular basis. The sun is not the only thing that can cause your carpet to fade. There are certain kinds of cleaners and other chemicals that can cause carpet colors to change or fade. Be careful with the types of cleaner you use on the carpet and avoid bleach. If you ever put any creams or ointments on your feet, allow them to completely dry before walking on your carpet so you do not get those chemicals on the carpet.

How to Restore Faded Carpet

If you are trying to repair faded carpet instead of just preventing fading, there are a few things you can do. You will not be able to completely reverse carpet fading but you may be able to make it look a bit better. If you have a spot fading, mix salt and hot water together and apply it to the carpet after you have vacuumed it. Once it has dried, you can vacuum it up and it should reverse some of the fading. To prevent more fading or discoloration, you should take proper care to clean any spills as soon as possible. You should also consider getting professional carpet cleaning on a regular basis.

Proper carpet care and cleaning can make a big difference in your carpet color over time. You may not notice a big difference with regular cleaning but over time if you did not provide proper maintenance, you would definitely be able to tell and you would have faded spots.
